Beauty and the Beast was thoroughly entertaining and is the most magical show that have been presented in the Marina Bay Sands Grand Theatre in recent memory.
The musical was expanded from 1991 film of the same name and has music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The movie made history when it was the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and Best Original Score. Though based on a film, the musical features new songs and new scenes that add more to the depth to the characters and plot. The most notable addition is the song A Change In Me.
The casting of the leads is top notch and their performances memorable. Belle was tastefully played by Hilary Maiberger and surprised everyone when it turns out that she is also a good dancer. Judging from her performance as Belle, one can say that she is a triple threat. Beast, as played by Darick Pead, was very successful in playing fearsome, funny and romantic depending on what is required by the scene. Pead’s voice has a tenor timbre that he used to beautiful effect in the tender moments. Adam Dietlein was both visually and vocally delightful as Gaston. Although the beginning of the songs Home and If I Can’t Love Her were more spoken than sung, the emotional and mental intent of the actors were clear.
The ensemble and minor leads were also entertaining to watch. The rousing group numbers with wondrous choreography left a lot of smiles on the faces of the members of the audience. The highlight would have to be extended dance that used the mugs as percussion. The dance was very effective and the complex choreography appeared easy for all of those on stage.
The musical is also full of special effects that are almost magical, from the Prologue to the seamless change of scenes, the talking and singing head of chip to the final translation that made some members of the audience gasp audibly.
Experience once more the memorable songs from the show, namely: Belle, Gaston, Be Our Guest, Something There and the title song Beauty and the Beast. This musical is perfect for a date or a family outing. The new touring production is by the original creators of the Broadway production and includes the Tony Award winning costumes of Ann Hould-Ward.
